RexecJ will work with any Java 2 (that is, version 1.2 or later) Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK), though it has only been tested with the Sun JDK versions 1.3.1 and 1.4.2. Additionally, RexecJ also requires an XML parser library that supports XML Schema. Currently, the only XML parser library compatible with RexecJ is the Xerces 2 Java Parser. Any recent version of Xerces should work with RexecJ, but it is highly recommended that the version of Xerces shipped with RexecJ is used.

RexecJ also contains executable script files for launching the RexecJ client and server programs. The included Windows batch file scripts are compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. The included Unix shell scripts should be compatible with most Unix shells.

To install RexecJ, extract if you are using a Windows operating system or rexecj_unix-1.0.0.tar.gz if you are using a Unix-based operating system. All files in the archive will extract to a subdirectory named rexecj.

Before the RexecJ client or server programs can be run, make sure that the environment variable JAVA_HOME has been set to the location of a compatible JRE or JDK. For example:

set JAVA_HOME=c:\j2sdk

will set the location of the JAVA_HOME environment variable to c:\j2sdk on Windows and

export JAVA_HOME=/opt/j2sdk

will set the location of the JAVA_HOME environment variable to /opt/j2sdk on a Unix-based operating system.

Once these steps have been completed, RexecJ will be ready to run.
